Prescription drugs, particularly psychiatric medications, have become the leading cause of death in the United States, surpassing heart disease and cancer. Dr. Gøtzsche argues that drug overuse, including antidepressants, neuroleptics, and NSAIDs, contributes to an alarming death toll, with 882,000 deaths annually. He points out that most of these deaths are preventable, as many patients who died didn’t need the drugs that caused their fatalities. Systemic failures and underreporting of adverse drug effects further obscure the true scale of the crisis. Despite the evidence, regulation remains permissive, often exacerbating the problem.
