Why Homeschooling Is Surging in Canada — And What It Means for Families
Across Canada, more families are choosing to take their children out of the traditional school system and homeschool them. In provinces like Ontario and British Columbia, homeschooling registrations have increased by 40–60% since 2020, reflecting a nationwide trend. Parents cite a range of reasons, including concerns about mental health, curriculum choices, and the quality of instruction. Increasingly, families are leaving schools because of government-mandated vaccines, intrusive health policies, and the promotion of ideologies that conflict with their values.
While Canadian homeschooling laws vary by province—some requiring detailed reporting, others leaving families largely autonomous—the movement is reshaping how Canadians think about education. Families are seeking flexibility, individualized learning and the ability to guide moral and intellectual development in ways that traditional classrooms may not allow.
Many parents feel that the public school system no longer reflects the values they want to instill in their children. From the teaching of controversial ideologies to curriculum decisions that may conflict with family beliefs, parents are increasingly taking education into their own hands. Homeschooling allows families to control what their children learn, when they learn it, and in what environment, giving them the freedom to focus on both academic excellence and moral development.
In a recent article, Dr. Brianna Ladapo, MD, MPH (and wife of Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo), explores homeschooling as a form of parental empowerment and resistance to cultural pressures in schools. She explains that traditional schooling can enforce agendas that conflict with parents’ values, and that removing children from this system allows families to focus on individualized learning, moral development, and autonomy. Ladapo frames homeschooling as more than an educational choice—it is a deliberate reclaiming of authority over children’s upbringing, especially during times of societal change.
