U.S. Cancels $700M+ Moderna Bird Flu Vaccine Contract

According to Reuters, the Trump administration has cancelled more than $700 million in funding to Moderna for its experimental mRNA bird flu vaccine. The funding, originally granted under the Biden administration, was intended to support final-stage development and expanded clinical trials for multiple flu strains, including the H5N1 avian flu.

After a detailed internal review, the HHS announced the project no longer met required scientific or safety standards. This decision comes amid growing concerns, as bird flu has been spreading among livestock in North America, with less than 100 human cases reported (three cases in Canada)—mostly in farm workers.

Moderna had been relying on this vaccine, along with others in its mRNA pipeline, to make up for declining demand for COVID shots. The company says it still plans to pursue development independently.

The McCullough Foundation‘s Nicolas Hulscher wrote in his Substack, “This is a very positive development. mRNA-based injections have repeatedly shown complete failure and cause catastrophic harm, as we’ve seen with COVID-19 and RSV.

U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has long questioned the blanket use of vaccines, has urged for a more cautious, gold standard science-based approach—especially when it comes to protecting public health.
