The MTHFR Gene: What It Means — and How to Support Your Body Naturally
Original article by Dr. Jeffrey Barke, Rx for Liberty
What Is the MTHFR Gene?
Most people have never heard of it, but the MTHFR gene (short for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) plays a key role in how your body uses folate (vitamin B9) from food and supplements.
Folate is essential for your body’s methylation process — a system that helps detoxify the body, balance hormones, make brain chemicals, and repair DNA.
When the MTHFR gene doesn’t function properly — something known as an MTHFR variant — your body may have a harder time processing folate. This can lead to higher levels of a substance called homocysteine, which may affect heart health, mood, fertility, and energy.
Researchers estimate that up to 40% of people carry some version of this gene variant. It’s very common — and it doesn’t mean you’re sick, only that your body may need a little extra nutritional support.
Why It Matters
People with an MTHFR variant may be more likely to experience:
-
Fatigue or low energy
-
Brain fog or depression
-
Hormonal or fertility challenges
-
Heart or circulation issues
-
ADHD, Autism spectrum and developmental differences
-
Difficulty detoxifying chemicals or medications
This gene doesn’t cause these conditions on its own, but it can make your system more sensitive to toxins, stress, and nutrient deficiencies.
Babies with an MTHFR mutation are more vulnerable to the effects of environmental toxins and neurotoxins such as aluminum and mercury, as their ability to detoxify is impaired. Given that this mutation is associated with numerous illnesses secondary to poor detoxification, a simple DNA methylation pathway profile test can allow individuals to make better healthcare decisions for themselves and their children and should be recommended for all pregnant women.
How to Get Tested in Canada
A simple DNA test can show whether you have an MTHFR variant.
Testing options:
-
LifeLabs – offers genetic and nutritional testing; some regions can test for MTHFR through a physician referral.
-
Dynacare – may provide testing if ordered by a healthcare provider.
-
Private functional or integrative clinics – many naturopathic or functional medicine doctors in Canada offer MTHFR testing.
You can also ask your healthcare provider to check:
-
Homocysteine (a marker of methylation health)
-
Vitamin B12 and folate levels
If your homocysteine is elevated or your B vitamins are low, you may benefit from extra nutritional support.
Nutrients That Help the MTHFR Gene Work Better
Certain vitamins and minerals help your body work around the gene’s limitations. These include:
-
Methylfolate (active folate) – the natural, usable form of vitamin B9
-
Methylcobalamin (vitamin B12) – supports nerves, mood, and energy
-
Vitamin B6 (P5P form) – helps your body use homocysteine properly
-
Trimethylglycine (TMG) – supports methylation and detoxification
-
Magnesium – needed for hundreds of body processes, including methylation
Together, these nutrients help your body detoxify, balance hormones, and make energy more efficiently.
10 Simple Ways to Support Your MTHFR Gene Naturally
-
Avoid “enriched” or “fortified” flour.
These contain synthetic folic acid, which your body may not process well. Choose organic, unprocessed grains instead. -
Use methylated B vitamins.
Look for a B-complex that lists methylfolate, methylcobalamin, and P5P on the label. -
Eat folate-rich foods.
Great sources include spinach, kale, beets, lentils, chickpeas, and avocados. -
Reduce toxin exposure.
Avoid plastic containers, synthetic fragrances, non-stick pans, and aluminum-based deodorants. Use a water filter if possible. -
Support your liver.
Eat cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli and cabbage), drink milk thistle tea, and sweat regularly through movement or sauna. -
Care for your gut.
Your gut bacteria make natural folate and B vitamins. Eat fermented foods like sauerkraut or kefir and avoid unnecessary antibiotics. -
Manage stress.
Stress depletes nutrients. Try prayer, meditation, breathing exercises, or gratitude journaling. -
Get enough magnesium.
Magnesium glycinate is gentle and supports relaxation and methylation. -
Go easy on alcohol.
Alcohol depletes folate and B12, so limit intake and replenish if you drink. -
Check your labs regularly.
Re-test homocysteine and vitamin levels every few months if you’re supplementing.
The Bottom Line
Nearly half of all people may have an MTHFR variant. That’s not a disease — it’s simply a reminder that our bodies are sensitive to environmental toxins, processed food, and chronic stress.
The good news: you can take charge.
By eating real food, reducing toxins, and using the right forms of B vitamins, you can help your body detoxify, boost energy, and protect your long-term health.
