New Study: Glyphosate Exposure Linked to Early Kidney Damage in Children
Why Even Urban Kids Aren’t Safe from the Health Risks of Glyphosate
A new study published in Science of The Total Environment sheds light on a troubling connection between glyphosate exposure and early signs of kidney injury in children. While glyphosate is typically associated with agricultural use, researchers found the chemical in the urine of urban children—confirming that exposure isn’t limited to farmworkers or rural areas.
The study examined 221 pediatric participants and measured levels of both glyphosate and a key biomarker of kidney injury called KIM-1 (Kidney Injury Molecule-1). Children with glyphosate concentrations above 2.433 parts per billion—around the 75th percentile—had significantly higher KIM-1 levels. In fact, for every unit increase in glyphosate, KIM-1 levels rose by an average of 42–52%, signaling early kidney damage before symptoms become clinically evident.
Importantly, glyphosate was found to account for over half the variability in KIM-1 levels, according to a machine learning analysis (SHAP model). This strong link highlights the urgent need for better monitoring of glyphosate exposure, especially among children, who are more vulnerable to toxic effects due to their developing bodies.
Researchers stress that current health assessments may overlook subclinical kidney damage, and biomarkers like KIM-1 offer a valuable tool for early detection. With glyphosate exposure linked to kidney injury even in non-farming children, this study raises serious public health concerns and underscores the need for more protective measures and transparent risk assessments regarding glyphosate use.
Given this compelling evidence of harm, the precautionary principle supports drastically reducing glyphosate exposure, especially for children! If we don’t change anything, our children will be faced with a very sad choice in the event of renal failure- GE pig kidney transplants. – GMO/Toxin Free USA
