Dr. Matt Strauss: Left-Wing Toronto Media Got it Wrong About Me and the Pandemic

Adjusted for age, COVID mortality in the health region I oversaw is 30%  lower than the provincial average.

As a critical care doctor these last 10 years, I went to work every day trying to save as many lives as possible. From a workload point of view, my ICU colleagues and I bore the brunt of the first few COVID waves. I was grateful for the opportunity to serve. A once-in-a-lifetime pandemic is what I trained for.

As the pandemic dragged on, I became increasingly concerned that our slapdash approach to restrictions risked harming our social fabric and thereby, the public health. It is healthy for people to smile at each other in the shop. It is healthy for children to play sports and attend school. It is healthy for families and faith communities to gather for holidays. The cost of interrupting such activities, I warned, would not be measured in mere annoyance but in significant mental distress and even lives lost by domestic violence, suicide and overdose. Sadly, these things have come to pass.

Dr. Matt Strauss is a critical care physician and acting medical officer of health for Haldimand-Norfolk.
