‘Kids in Crisis’– Activists, Parents and Detransitioners Gather on Parliament Hill
Canada’s approach to pediatric gender medicine is facing growing scrutiny as activists, parents, detransitioners and medical critics gathered on Parliament Hill this week demanding protections for children.
At the May 5 “Kids in Crisis” press conference organized by Mayday Canada, speakers called for restrictions on puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gender-related surgeries for minors, while also demanding greater protections for parental rights.
The organization says Canada is ignoring growing international scrutiny surrounding pediatric gender medicine. Speakers pointed to countries including the United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, where health authorities have moved to reevaluate or restrict certain medical interventions for youth experiencing gender distress.
Mayday Canada is also calling for the repeal of Bill C-4 (An Act respecting certain affordability measures for Canadians) and Bill C-16 (Protecting Victims Act), arguing the legislation has contributed to an environment where questioning gender ideology can carry legal and professional risks.
Lead organizer Jeff Evely, a 20-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, shared his family’s experience after his daughter entered Ontario’s gender clinic system as a teenager.
Evely said he became alarmed by what he witnessed during medical appointments and believes parents are increasingly being sidelined in major decisions involving their children’s health and identity.
Keynote speaker Scott Newgent, founder of TReVoices, also spoke about his own transition and the severe health complications he says followed. Newgent, who transitioned as an adult and now advocates against the medical transitioning of children, has previously warned Canadian lawmakers that policies restricting so-called “conversion therapy” could increase pressure on youth to pursue medical transition.
Barry Neufeld, former British Columbia school board trustee who was fined $750,000 by the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal for speaking out about the issue, was among the speakers.
The event reflects growing public debate across Canada over parental rights, informed consent, school policies and the long-term impacts of gender-related medical interventions on minors.
