Autism on the Rise — A Conversation with Dr. Sylvia Fogel & the American Health Revolution

The American Health Revolution (AHR) is a new grassroots organization empowering communities to reclaim their health through education, advocacy and transparency. While based in the United States, AHR’s mission is highly relevant to Canadians as chronic disease continues to rise across North America.

Dr. Sylvia Fogel, MD Assistant in Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and Instructor at Harvard Medical School, joins two of AHR’s co-founders, Karen McDonough (former Senior Director of Chapters and Advocacy at Children’s Health Defense) and Paul Lobosco (former volunteer leader and coordinator with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign), for a discussion about the dramatic surge in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the U.S.—a trend that mirrors what we are now seeing in Canada.

  • Autism currently affects approximately one in 31 children in the U.S., with up to 30% experiencing profound forms of the disorder.

  • In Canada, newly released data by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) shows that autism prevalence increased from one in 714 children in 2000–2001 to one in 44 children by 2023–2024—an astounding 1,507% increase.

Dr. Fogel is a psychiatrist, advocate and also a parent of a child with profound autism and Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS). She understands first-hand the complex, life-altering challenges families face daily.

A co-founder of the Autism Innovation Coalition, Dr. Fogel integrates functional medicine and systems biology in her clinical work, has more than two decades of experience in medical education, and was recently featured in Del Bigtree’s documentary An Inconvenient Study.
