Alberta Family Seeks Answers After Toddler’s Death Sparks International Investigation
A heartbreaking tragedy in rural Alberta has sparked an international investigation into medical accountability, professional oversight, and patient safety in Canada.
In December 2024, two-and-a-half-year-old Alita died just hours after being seen twice by the same physician in Beaverlodge, Alberta. According to her family, their concerns about her condition were dismissed, and she was sent home despite her deteriorating health.
Just three months later, Alita’s father, Peter, tragically drowned while lighting memorial candles for his daughter on a lake near their home.
Following testimony from Alita’s mother, Esther, independent journalist and filmmaker Dan Hartman launched an investigation into the physician involved in the case. His research led him to South Africa, where he sought answers about the doctor’s professional history and qualifications.
According to Hartman, the physician had previously been suspended in South Africa before later obtaining a medical licence to practise in Alberta. To verify these claims, Hartman travelled to Cape Town and Pretoria, visiting institutions connected to the physician’s educational and professional background.
The investigation, much of it conducted undercover, explores questions about medical credential verification, regulatory oversight, and patient safety in Canada.
Hartman says evidence gathered during the investigation raises serious concerns about possible fraud and misrepresentation. The findings are now being compiled into a documentary that aims to examine the circumstances surrounding Alita’s death and the broader issues of accountability within the healthcare system.
Now the filmmaker is seeking funding to complete the project. According to Hartman, approximately $8,000 is needed to finalize production and cover remaining travel, research, and documentary expenses. Additional funds would support further investigations into medical accountability and patient safety in Canada.
Supporters say the documentary seeks to provide answers for Alita’s family and shine a light on questions that many believe deserve closer scrutiny.
As the investigation moves toward completion, the family continues to seek transparency and accountability surrounding the events that led to the loss of their daughter.
