Study Links Surge in Children’s Memory Problems to Wireless Radiation

A new peer-reviewed study in Sweden and Norway reports an alarming rise in memory problems among children and teens, linking the trend to increasing exposure to wireless radiation from cellphones, Wi-Fi and 5G.

The study, led by Dr. Lennart Hardell and Mona Nilsson of the Swedish Radiation Protection Foundation, analyzed national health data and found:

  • In Norway, medical consultations for memory disturbances among children ages 5–19 rose 8.5-fold from 2006 to 2024.

  • In Sweden, diagnoses of mild cognitive impairment — which includes memory problems — increased nearly 60-fold from 2010 to 2024.

The researchers emphasized that these increases cannot be explained solely by changes in diagnostic criteria or reporting. They called on public health authorities to take the findings seriously and to implement measures to reduce children’s exposure to radiofrequency (RF) radiation, especially in schools.

Hardell and Nilsson cited decades of research showing that even low levels of RF radiation can negatively affect the brain, particularly the hippocampus, a key region for memory and learning.

The article also highlights regulatory concerns. In Europe, the SCHEER Opinion, a 2023 EU report, concluded that there is no strong evidence linking wireless radiation to health problems. Critics, including the Swedish Radiation Protection Foundation, allege that the report was biased, relied on industry-funded research, and excluded independent experts.

In the United States, the FCC’s current RF exposure limits date back to 1996 and are based on outdated studies. The agency has not yet provided evidence that its guidelines protect humans and the environment from chronic RF radiation exposure.

“Protecting children must be the top priority,” Hardell said. “We can no longer ignore the evidence linking wireless exposure to cognitive harm.”
