Free Speech Victory: BC’s “Billboard Chris” Wins Censorship Case in Australia
In a major win for free speech (and parental rights), British Columbia’s Chris “Billboard Chris” Elston has successfully overturned an Australian government order that censored his X post under the country’s Online Safety Act.
We won!
Together with @X, we just defeated Australia’s government in a huge victory for free speech!
The eSafety Commissioner’s effort to censor me and to demand that X complies has failed. This sets an important precedent.

Elston’s 2024 post criticized the World Health Organization’s appointment of controversial “expert” Teddy Cook and referred to Cook using biologically accurate pronouns. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner labeled the post “cyber abuse” and ordered X (formerly Twitter) to remove it.
Backed by ADF International and Australia’s Human Rights Law Alliance, Elston challenged the censorship as a violation of fundamental speech rights. This week, the Administrative Review Tribunal in Melbourne agreed, ruling the Commissioner’s decision wrong and striking it down.
“This is a decisive win for free speech… and evidence of the expansive reach of censorial forces beyond national borders. Today, free speech has prevailed.”
— Paul Coleman, ADF International
This victory sends a clear message: governments cannot silence peaceful expression, even across borders, and those defending truth and protecting children from harmful ideologies must not be muzzled.
