Global Glyphosate Study Confirms Roundup Weedkillers Cause Multiple Cancers—Even at “Safe” Doses

A groundbreaking international study has found that glyphosate—the world’s most widely used herbicide—and its commercial formulations cause multiple types of cancer, even at doses considered “safe” by regulators in Canada, the EU and U.S.

The Global Glyphosate Study, led by Italy’s Ramazzini Institute in collaboration with top scientists from Boston College, George Mason University, King’s College London and others, administered glyphosate and two widely used commercial products (Roundup BioFlow and Ranger Pro) to rats through drinking water over a two-year period, starting in the womb.

The results were alarming.

Researchers observed significantly increased rates of both benign and malignant tumors across numerous organs—including the liver, thyroid, ovaries, kidneys, pancreas, mammary glands, and nervous system. Particularly disturbing was the spike in rare, aggressive cancers like leukemia in young rats, equivalent to cancer in young adults in humans.

“Roughly half of leukemia deaths in the treated groups occurred before one year of age in rats—comparable to under 40 in humans,” said lead researcher Dr. Daniele Mandrioli.

These findings directly support the 2015 classification by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which labeled glyphosate a “probable human carcinogen.” The new data aligns with prior epidemiological and experimental evidence linking glyphosate exposure to blood cancers and other malignancies.

This is not an isolated warning. Previous phases of the Global Glyphosate Study found that glyphosate harms the gut microbiome, disrupts hormones, and causes reproductive toxicity—even at levels considered acceptable by health authorities in both Europe and North America.

“This study confirms what many independent scientists and public health advocates have warned for years—glyphosate poses a serious threat to human health, particularly to developing children and unborn babies,” said Dr. Philip Landrigan of Boston College.

CHD Canada urges the new Minister of Health, the Honourable Marjorie Michel to direct Health Canada’s Pesticide Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) to immediately reassess glyphosate approvals and prioritize the protection of pregnant women, infants and the public at large.

According to an article by Canadian charity Safe Food Matters who sued the PRMA over its 2017 assessment of glyphosate (the case is ongoing), PMRA must address these new findings by August 18, 2025, due to its recent Federal Court case. Read more here.
