Another “Trusted Voice”? Ottawa Appoints New Chief Public Health Officer
Canada has a new top public health official — and for many Canadians who questioned pandemic-era policies, the appointment feels less like a fresh start and more like a continuation of the same narrative.
In an April 2, 2026, statement released by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), Dr. Joss Reimer formally stepped into the role of Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO), pledging to advance “credible, evidence-based health information” while prioritizing issues such as measles outbreaks, the toxic drug crisis and expanding immunization efforts.
The messaging is all too familiar.
Appointed by Minister of Health Marjorie Michel, Reimer’s opening remarks make clear that “vaccination” will remain central to federal public health strategy, including support for the upcoming Vaccination Week in the Americas and collaboration with international partners like the Pan American Health Organization. She also emphasized the need to “address health misinformation” — language that many Canadians have come to associate with censorship, narrative control and the dismissal of legitimate scientific and medical debate.
The appointment comes at a time when public trust in health institutions remains at an all-time low.
Throughout the COVID pandemic, officials repeatedly assured Canadians that COVID shots were safe, effective and necessary to stop transmission — claims that were later challenged by emerging data, policy reversals, and firsthand experiences reported by families across the country. Yet despite these failures, there has been little accountability within Canada’s public health leadership.
At the core of this erosion of trust is the failure to uphold informed consent and respect for medical choice.
Canadians were subjected to unprecedented pressure — from mandates to social exclusion — to accept a medical product, often without full transparency about risks, limitations, or long-term effects. Dissenting voices, including thousands of physicians and scientists, were silenced or discredited, while those raising concerns about injuries were ignored.
Reimer’s statement signals no departure from that approach.
Instead, it reinforces a framework that prioritizes centralized messaging, mass immunization campaigns, and the policing of so-called “misinformation,” rather than transparency, open scientific discourse, and the fundamental right of individuals to make voluntary medical decisions without coercion.
Reimer also expressed gratitude to Dr. Natasha Crowcroft, who served as Acting CPHO since September 2025 and will continue in a senior leadership role overseeing infectious diseases and immunization programs — another indication that the same institutional perspectives will remain firmly in place.
For many Canadians, the concern is not simply who holds the position — but whether anything will actually change.
The language of “credibility” and “public trust” has been used repeatedly by officials who, during the COVID response, dismissed dissenting experts, marginalized injured individuals, and promoted one-size-fits-all policies with little room for nuance or individualized risk assessment.
Now, with a renewed emphasis on expanding immunization programs and countering “false information,” critics argue that Canadians are being asked — once again — to trust the very system that failed to listen to them.
If this marks a “new chapter” in Canadian public health, it appears to be written in the same ink.
